AREA OVERVIEW
La Herradura is located on the Costa Tropical, in the beautiful and rugged province of Granada in Southern Andalucia, less than an hour by car east from Malaga airport, and 70 mins south from Granada.
The beautiful bay of La Herradura is one of the prettiest bays along the south coast of Spain, shaped in a horseshoe from which the village derives its name. The unspoilt village of La Herradura presents a typical Andulacian aspect of white-washed buildings climbing the gentle slopes of a small hill leading up from the beach.
The village and bay are framed by a backdrop of spectacular mountains forming part of the Sierra de Almijara. The sheltered beach is a 2km strip set between the natural headlands of Punta de la Mona and Cerro Gordo and is lined with outside cafes, bars and restaurants. La Herradura has a good selection of shops, small supermarkets and the bonus of a daily market with fresh meat, fish, and fruit 'n' veg.
Water sports, tennis, walking, sailing, horse riding and para gliding are some of the many activities that are available. There are three quality golf courses within easy reach, Anorretta, Baviera and Los Moriscos bookings for tee-times can be organised for you.
A little further to the east of La Herradura, just round the Punta is the recently built marina development of Marina Del Este, it is also set in a beautiful location with an adjoining beach and a number of quayside bars and restaurants. The coastline is famous for its scuba diving; there are many dive schools in the area taking advantage of some of the beautiful remote coves and beaches in the surrounding area.
Winter holidays are ideal in La Herradura with the special sub tropical micro climate experienced on the Costa Tropical, sheltered by the local mountain range, the average temperatures are several degrees warmer than the nearby Costa del Sol. However only a 1 ½ hour drive away there is skiing on the high mountain slopes of the Sierra Nevada from late November through to April.
